San Diego County is a county located near the Pacific Ocean in the far southwest of
the U.S. state of California. It is the southwesternmost county in the contiguous 48
states. The population in 2000 was 2,813,834, but a July 2008 estimate placed the

CABRILLO NATIONAL MONUMENT  A Voyage of Discovery Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo led
the first European expedition to explore what is now the west coast of the United
States. Cabrillo departed from the port of Navidad, Mexico, on June 27, 1542. Three
months later he arrived at "a very good enclosed port." That port is known today as
San Diego bay. Historians believe he anchored his flagship, the San Salvador, on
Point Loma's east shore near Cabrillo National Monument

de Alcala was founded on July 16, 1769 by Blessed Junipero Serra. It was designated
as a Minor Basilica in 1976 by Pope Paul VI. The Mission today is an active Catholic
Parish in the Diocese of San Diego.

Petco Park is an open-air ballpark in downtown San Diego, California, USA. It opened
in 2004, replacing Qualcomm Stadium as the home park of Major League Baseball's
San Diego Padres. Before then, the Padres shared Qualcomm Stadium with the NFL's
San Diego Chargers. The stadium is named after the animal and pet supplies
retailer Petco, which is based in San Diego and paid for the naming rights.
San Diego Bay is a natural harbor adjacent to San Diego, California. It is 12 mi/19
km long, 1 mi/1.6 km–3 mi/4.8 km wide. The bay is bordered by the cities of San
Diego, National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado.
Considered to be one of the best natural harbors on the western coasts of the North
American continent, San Diego Bay was among the earliest portions of those coasts
to be settled by Europeans (it was colonized by Spain beginning in 1769) and later
served (as it continues to this day) as the home of the United States Navy's Pacific
Fleet.

CORONADO BRIDGE The 11,179-foot-long (3,407 m or 2.1 mi) bridge ascends from
Coronado at a 4.67 percent grade before curving 80 degrees toward San Diego. The
span reaches a maximum height of 200 feet (61m), allowing the U.S. Navy ships
which operate out of the nearby Naval Station San Diego to pass underneath it. The
five-lane bridge features the longest box girder in the world.The Coronado Bridge
Construction started in February 1967, and the bridge was opened to traffic on
August 3, 1969, during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of
San Diego.
